Red Purple Modernization (RPM)- Phase I

Project Overview:  A $2.1B program to rebuild a 9.6 mile stretch of track, stations, structures, and related systems to double passenger capacity and bring the Red and Purple rail lines into a state of good repair for the next 60 to 80 years.  Benefits include reduced travel times, improved access to job markets and destinations, as well as improved access to people with disabilities.  CTA RPM - Phase I includes Lawrence to Bryn Mawr Modernization (LBMM) which rebuilt tracks and support structures throughout Lawrence, Argyle, Berwyn, and Bryn Mawr Stations and Red-Purple Bypass (RPB) which constructed a rail bypass north of Belmont Station allowing CTA to address capacity constraints caused by an outdated rail intersection used by 3 CTA rail lines.

Our Scope: As a subcontractor to Walsh Fluor Design Build Team (WFDBT), CSS managed testing & commissioning efforts, tracks resolution of deficiencies, and maintains signal maintenance logs.  CSS successfully performed commissioning services and tie-in circuitry cutovers of Addison Relay House and Barry Relay House. We further support the Design Build Team by conducting QA audits, coordinating Testing & Inspection (T&I) efforts, and assisting in systems related Safety & Security verifications.

Belmont Crossover and Track Replacement

Project Overview:    A project to remove and replace the aging diamond crossover track and eight expansion gaps in the CTA Blue Line’s Kimball Subway, this critical upgrade, including the replacement of the original 50-year-old Belmont crossover, supported increased ridership and ensured continued reliable transit service on one of CTA’s busiest lines. The work was completed over nine (9) 54-hour weekend shutdowns with full service restoration after each occurrence, requiring detailed planning to minimize disruptions. Scope included installation of a new diamond crossover track, replacement of approximately 1,200 linear feet of track, construction of new underground and above ground traction power ductbanks, upgrades to signal systems, as installation of new underground drainage infrastructure.

Our Scope:  CSS provided Signal South, a subcontractor to John Burns Construction, signal test engineering services by performing signal tests per approved test procedures, managing, resolving, and documenting discrepancies, and interfacing with client(s) and CTA to effectuate tests and observations

Red Line Extension (RLE) - Mainline Design Build Project

Project Overview:  A $2.9B project to extend 5.6 miles of track beyond the current 95th St. Terminal to 130th St. with accessible stations at 103rd St., 111th St., Michigan Ave. near 115th St., and 130th St.. The largest project in CTA history, RLE aims to provide faster connections from the Chicago's far south side to the rest of the city, increase access to affordable transportation for residents, and serve as an economic catalyst for the community.

Our Scope: As a subcontractor Walsh Vinci Transit Community Partners (WTCP) and partners, CSS is performing signal systems design services, signal manufacturer field & resident engineering services, and signal and communications Safety & Security Certification support services on the project.
